Youth Empowerment Center Youth Empowerment Center

Youth Empowerment Center

1357A 5th Street
Oakland, CA 94607
USA

Established 2000

Founded in January 2000 by young people who have emerged as leadership from existing youth nonprofits, YEC represents the organic development of young people creating new organizations, institutions, and intermediaries that meet the needs of their constituencies and communities. YEC was formed by several of the Bay Area's strongest youth-supporting institutions--C-Beyond, the School of Unity and Liberation, Underground Railroad and Youth Force--to better meet the needs of the growing youth movement.

The youth-supporting groups clustered together to form the YEC Support Center, which serves a broad range of youth projects with technical assistance, training, and organizational development programs. YEC also committed to fiscally sponsoring grassroots youth projects that do exciting work but lack nonprofit status. These projects are managed by YEC but maintain creative control over the programs and direction of their work. [Text adapted from website]
