Bennett Center of London Bennett Center of London

Bennett Center of London

The Bennett Center of London, Inc.
240 Bennett Circle
London, KY 40741
USA

Agency Type: Human service

Established 1998

In 1998 Union College, Red Bird Missionary Conference, and the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church did extensive exploration of ways to creatively re-use the facilities formerly occupied by Sue Bennett College in London, Kentucky.

From this beginning emerged a three-way partnership to establish the Bennett Center and restore ministry to the campus. One of its programs, the nonprofit Incubator, offers practical support to nonprofit groups organized to address community needs. In addition, buildings on the campus house nonprofit organizations such as the local YMCA, the London Early Childhood Educations Center, Laurel County Adult Education and Literacy, and Goodwill Industries, which address various needs of children and families. Calhoun Building

Calhoun Building

#404
711 West Lake St.
Minneapolis, MN 55408
USA

Agency Type: Arts

Established 1996

The Calhoun Building is a six-story Minneapolis "arts incubator" whose 44,000 square feet provide 36 affordable office, studio, rehearsal, and performance space for arts organizations as well as market-rate space for commercial tenants.

It is the first development financed without public or private subsidies by Artspace, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit whose mission is to provide incubator space for small and emerging arts organizations.

Built in 1913 as an athletic club, the Calhoun originally boasted both a sixth-floor gymnasium and a basement bowling alley. But for most of its life, it was an office building with a variety of small business and professional tenants. Artspace acquired the Calhoun in 1996 and has made substantial improvements since then--a total investment of $1.1 million. [Text adapted from website]
