THEARC (Town Hall Education, Arts, and Recreation Center)

Suite 103
Mississippi Avenue SE
Washington, D.C.
USA

Agency Type: Arts

Established 2005

The nonprofit group Building Bridges Across the River (BBAR), along with the real estate developer William C. Smith Company, plan to alter the artistic and recreational landscape of Washington D.C.'s Anacostia area by building a 110,000-square-foot community center known as THE ARC (Town Hall Education, Arts, and Recreation Center).

In addition to providing a home for a new Anacostia branch of the Levine School of Music, the facility includes a 350-seat theater, music, and dance performance space; a multi-screen movie theater; and several other artistic and recreational components. To supplement THE ARC's cultural offerings, BBAR has developed a carefully planned collaborative of community organizations that will have offices in the building, bringing several established social programs to people whose economic circumstances would not otherwise allow access to them. Thoreau Center for Sustainability

PO Box 29585
San Francisco, CA 94129
USA

Agency Type: Mixed

Established 1995

The Thoreau Center for Sustainability is located in several rehabilitated buildings in the historic Presidio, once a military base and now a national park in San Francisco, California. It houses a vibrant community of primarily not-for-profit organizations working for a healthy environment and a just society. The center also facilitates education and community building for and with this community of organizations.

The center's "green" architectural plan used sustainably harvested wood, recycled building materials, non-toxic paints and energy-efficient designs that maximize sunlight and natural ventilation. Today, the Thoreau Center's 12 buildings house more than 50 organizations working for social justice, community education and development, public health, and environmental stewardship. It is fulfilling the Presidio vision: combining preservation of the park's historic resources with creation of a global center for a sustainable future. [Text adapted from website]

It seeks to bring together at one welcoming location the supportive programs, services, and guidance that will help families and youth build better lives and a brighter future, overcoming poverty and neglect. In addition, the project will capture and portray, through an interactive Thurgood Marshall Center Heritage Program, the living stories of African American leaders and communities.
