Nonprofit professional associations, research institutions, advocacy groups, and umbrella organizations play increasingly important roles in educating the public and in promoting civil society and growth of the nonprofit sector. Some of these serve as meta-sites or search engines that access a wide range of information.

Alliance for Nonprofit Management
The Alliance is a membership association of individuals and organizations devoted to improving the management and governance capacity of nonprofits. AFP (formerly the National Society for Fundraising Executives) is a membership group and professional association. The CIVICUS is a global organization that promotes and supports the development of civil society. National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP)
NCRP's mission is to make philanthropy more responsive, more relevant, and more open and accountable. Its website provides links to a wide variety of organizations and information sources. The Society for Nonprofit Organizations provides information and resources to the nonprofit sector through its Learning Institute.
