Established in 1996, the award was named in recognition of Johnson, dean emeritus of the School of Social Work. The Latino/a Social Work Coalition student group, other social work students, and Lecturer Laura Sanders have been active in a new group called the Washtenaw Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights, created in response to the raids, detainments, and deportations of immigrant community members by federal immigration agents. Two social work students, Hypatia Ostojic and Elizabeth Mendez, were featured on Univision Detroit, Latino television station, at a picket of the Ann Arbor Federal Building, organized by Ostojic, Mendez, and Greg Pratt, also an MSW student.

Julie Maslowsky ('05) received the "Compassion in Action" award from the Dalai Lama on Sunday at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. She was nominated for this international award by the Jewel Heart Tibetan Buddhist Learning Center for her work in Quito, Ecuador. Last summer Maslowsky acted as field supervisor for four social work students who worked in Quito for four months.

Professor receives Fulbright award

Professor Srinika (Siri) Jayaratne, associate dean for faculty affairs, has received a Fulbright award to travel to Sri Lanka for six months. He will help the Department of Sociology at the University of Colombo in their search to develop a social work program. There is no university-based social work program in the country at this time.

Three students named Presidential Management Fellows

Kathleen Wade, assistant dean of hospital social work services and research assistant professor of social work, has been named recipient of the Eleanor Clark Award for Innovative Programs in Patient Care, presented by the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care (SSWLHC). Professor Srinika (Siri) Jayaratne is the recipient of this year's Distinguished Faculty Award at the School of Social Work. Siri Jayaratne is associate dean of faculty and academic affairs.

The School of Social Work Distinguished Faculty Award is intended to recognize a current governing faculty member in the School of Social Work who has achieved national recognition in scholarship, demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring, provided outstanding service to the School and the University, and/or contributed significantly to the professional community.

This year's award committee, appointed by the dean in consultation with the executive committee, is composed of Ruth Dunkle (chair), Kathleen Faller, Daphna Oyserman, Michael Spencer, and Amanda Tillotson (student).
