2007-08 STUDENT BUDGETS (as of 07/30/07)
The University’s Office of Financial Aid establishes standard student budgets as a basis for awarding financial aid funds. These budgets reflect typical “modest but adequate” expense patterns of University of Michigan students based on research conducted by the Office of Financial Aid. While the actual expenses of an individual student will vary based on his or her lifestyle, the estimated costs listed below should assist you in planning your own budget. Note: The figures below represent estimated expenses for two semesters of full-time enrollment (8 months).

Students may borrow long-term, low-interest federal loans through the University’s Office of Financial Aid. Federal Direct Student Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized), cannot exceed $20,500 per academic year, or cost of attendance, whichever is less. An academic year is defined as two terms of at least half-time enrollment. To estimate your eligibility to borrow, fill in the appropriate information below:
Estimated Student Budget for Two Semesters ($34,743 in-state; $46,601 non-resident) $_____________ Minus Financial Assistance (grant/scholarships, etc.) - $_____________ Equals Federal Direct Student Loan Eligibility (not to exceed $20,500 for two semesters) = $_____________
Most students may also be eligible for a Federal Perkins Loan (not to exceed $1,100) and/or a work-study award ($3,000) for two semesters. NOTE: Actual awards for Federal Perkins Loan and work-study awards vary from year to year depending on available funds.
Non-Need-Based Loans
For information on non-need-based loans that you may be eligible for, visit the University’s Office of Financial Aid’s website at: www.finaid.umich.edu/Types_of_Financial_Aid/Loans/loans.asp
