Robert Hampton

Robert L. Hampton received his A.B. degree from Princeton University, and his M.A. and PhD from the University of Michigan. He is Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Professor of Family Studies and Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is a Gimbel Mentoring Scholar. He has published extensively in the field of family violence including five edited books; Violence in the Black Family: Correlates and Consequences, Black Family Violence: Current Research and Theory, Family Violence: Prevention and Treatment, Preventing Violence in America and Substance Abuse, Family Violence, and Child Welfare: Bridging Perspectives. He is completing a second edition of Family Violence: Prevention and Treatment to be published by Sage Publications later this year. He is one of the founders of the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community.

Dr. Hampton serves on the Prince Georges County Superintendent of Schools Advisory Committee and the Institute for Women's Policy Research Advisory Committee. His research interests include interspousal violence, family abuse, community violence, stress and social support, and institutional responses to violence.
