New MSW Student Information Highlights

After you are admitted into the MSW program and have paid your deposit, you will receive an email with regard to scheduling a registration appointment date, a web-based group advising appointment, a field instruction web session appointment, and a date to attend an on-campus New Student Program session. Once this email is received, please contact the Office of Student Services at 734-936-0961 to schedule the following:

Fall 2009 Registration Appointment (required)

You must contact the Office of Student Services at 734-936-0961 to schedule a registration appointment date. All matriculated students are emailed a letter that includes the name of the student's registration group, as well as the possible dates for registration.

Registration appointment dates will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis within each registration group. Once you have scheduled a registration appointment date, registration can be completed remotely through Wolverine Access. The Office of Student Services will inform you when the 2009 Student Guide is available online. Please feel free to explore the Fall 2009 course schedule and course planning worksheets.

Web-Based Group Advising Session (required)

The Office of Student Services will hold group web sessions starting in July to provide incoming students with basic information regarding MSW program requirements and how to register for courses. The session will be interactive, allowing participants to ask any questions that they have. All matriculated students are emailed a letter that includes the possible dates for the web-based group advising sessions.

After the session, if you would like to have an individual session to discuss your program plan, you may call the Office of Student Services to set up an in-person or web/phone appointment with an Academic Planning Coordinator.

On-Campus New Student Program Sessions (optional)

For the third summer we are pleased to offer New Student Program sessions. Current MSW students have designed this program to help you make a successful transition into the School of Social Work. Incoming students are strongly encouraged to attend a Summer New Student Program session.

Summer New Student Program Session Schedule (10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.):

  • Linking your program options to your professional goals
  • Lunch
  • Learn useful web resources
  • Course registration
  • Around the U-M: All you need to know to get by (walking tour). Join current students for an optional social event at the end of the tour.

Space in New Student Program sessions is limited. Students should review their letter for summer session dates and call the Office of Student Services to sign up.

Field Instruction Web Session (optional)

Field placement application materials for students who will begin their field internship in September (i.e. advanced standing, 20-month, transfer students and students interested in a national or international placement) will be due to the Field Office on July 10, 2009. The Office of Field Instruction (OFI) will send out more information regarding this process in early June. OFI will hold web sessions to help students with any questions that they have about field requirements, the site selection process, etc.

Students may choose from the following field instruction web session dates:

  • June 12, 11:00am Eastern Daylight Time
  • June 16, 3:00pm Eastern Daylight Time
  • June 23, 1:00pm Eastern Daylight Time
  • July 7, 3:00pm Eastern Daylight Time

Be sure to sign up for one of these sessions when you call to schedule your fall registration appointment date. Information regarding the field placement process for 2009 will be email to all matriculated students’ U-M email accounts on June 4, 2009.

Fall Orientation (September 2, 3, and 4)

Please note that all students are expected to attend fall orientation on September 2 and 3. Some New Student Program presentations will also be conducted at fall orientation for students unable to attend a summer sessions. The Wednesday community service activities on September 2nd from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. are optional. All students are expected to attend fall orientation on Thursday, September 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition, students with Advanced Standing status or BSW graduates and transfer students with an exemption from Foundation Field requirements are expected to attend a morning field instruction session on Friday, September 3rd from 8:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. Click here for a preliminary orientation schedule.

Field Placement

For information on field placements and the field placement selection process, see the letter for incoming students by the director of field instruction. Advanced Standing, 20-month, Geriatric Scholars, National Community Scholars, and transfer students, as well as students interested in national or international field placements, typically begin field placement in September. Students beginning field placements in September must complete their field placement application process by July 10, 2009. Students enrolled in the 16-month curriculum schedule typically begin field work in January 2009 and will complete the selection process in September and October 2009.
