Dean Laura Lein is charged with the responsibility of developing policies and procedures related to financial affairs, administrative personnel, physical facilities, equipment maintenance and improvement, technical assistance to faculty, space allocation, and the general administration of the School.

Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs John Tropman has overall responsibility for a broad range of activities related to faculty and administrative functions both within the School and the broader University community. Responsibilities include oversight of faculty workload and annual review of the faculty, faculty mentoring, and administration and coordination of School policies and procedures.

Associate Dean for Educational Programs Mary Ruffolo has overall responsibility for educational programs and provides guidance and direction in all matters related to students. Responsibilities include oversight of all MSW and doctoral program activities, such as accreditation, curricular matters, relevant committees, recruitment/admissions, advising, registration, field instruction, continuing education, and adjunct appointments.

Associate Dean for Research Robert Joseph Taylor works with the faculty and others in developing research proposals and training grants. He coordinates the submission of research proposals and acts as the School's liaison with the University's Division of Research Development and Administration.

The Dean’s Office staff is responsible for secretarial and administrative duties for the dean and associate deans of the School of Social Work. Assistant to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Carol Richard is responsible for the calendar of the assistant dean for educational programs. She also answers questions from visitors and prospective students, coordinates special events, and assists in the management of the appointment process for LEO faculty and visiting professors.

Audio Visual Services

The audio visual office is responsible for staffing the clinical suite, which includes video and audio recording and dubbing for faculty and class distribution. The AV staff also maintains the room reservation system and is responsible for mail distribution. Requests for phones and phone changes are fielded through this office.

Business Operations

The Business Operations office (BusOps) coordinates the financial activities for the School of Social Work.

BusOps is responsible for timekeeping and processing of payroll for all staff. BusOps reviews and approves all expenditure transactions and manages all PCard activity for the School. In addition to monitoring and reconciling the monthly statements of activity for the general, designated, and expendable fund areas, the staff process journal entry requests, journal upload corrections, and funds transfers. The staff also process requests for the establishment of new project grants in the general, designated, and expendable fund areas, as well as for the quasi-endowment and endowment funds.

Jo Ann Marcoux, senior accountant, processes journal upload transfers and corrections for fund areas and prepares requests for the establishment of new project grants, quasi-endowments, and endowments. Kari Dumbeck, payroll coordinator, processes human resource (HR) transactions and manages the online timekeeping process.

Computer and Technology Support (CATS)

The Computer and Technology Support (CATS) office maintains the School of Social Work computing environment and provides computing assistance and training to School of Social Work faculty and staff.

Matt Walters, manager, maintains the servers and network, administers the SSW virtual firewall, provides frontline computing assistance to faculty and staff through the help desk, and serves as unit security coordinator and liaison to the University's Information Technology Security Services office. Chris Gardner provides frontline computing assistance to faculty and staff through the help desk and coordinates new computer deployments. Chuck Okafor provides frontline computing assistance to faculty and staff through the help desk and assists with new computer deployments.

The University of Michigan Family Assessment Clinic (FAC) is a multidisciplinary team, consisting of faculty, doctoral and master's students, and staff in the University of Michigan Schools of Social Work, Law, Medicine, and Education, the Department of Psychology, and the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Health System. The clinic provides services to the community by evaluating and treating situations involving possible or actual child maltreatment. In addition, the clinic serves as a context for developing knowledge and skills about child maltreatment, child welfare, and related issues through clinical practice and research.

Building on the legacy of Project STaR and the Sol Drachler Program in Jewish Communal Leadership. the University of Michigan's Jewish Communal Leadership Program is currently being restructured in collaboration with the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies, and in consultation with local, national, and international leaders in a wide variety of Jewish communal organizations. Plans are being developed to admit the new program's first student cohort in Fall 2010.

The Continuing Professional Education team coordinates the School of Social Work continuing education offerings and assists in the registration for continuing education mini-courses and workshops.

Renee Heath is the primary contact person for continuing education at the School. She secures approvals from the State of Michigan for social work continuing education offerings, sets up the databases to monitor registration, and acts as liaison to the associate dean for educational programs and the Faculty Continuing Education Committee around continuing education programming. Kim Cramer and Roxanne Loy assist in registration for continuing education programs and answer questions from the community about upcoming programs.

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations is committed to building and strengthening relationships between the School and its alumni and friends.

Lindsey Rossow-Rood, director of Development and Alumni Relations, is responsible for the strategic oversight of the office; she can be contacted with questions regarding making a gift to the SSW, planned giving, endowment information, School communications, the Alumni Board of Governors, or for general information on the School and its activities related to alumni and our friends.

Laurie Bueche, assistant director of Development and Alumni Relations, is responsible for the School’s alumni relations efforts and annual fund program; she can be contacted with questions regarding past or upcoming alumni events, the alumni directory, class gift program, University reunion programming, and gifts made to the School’s annual fund drive through phone and mail.

Leigh Johnson, administrative assistant, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office; she can be contacted with questions regarding the processing of your gift, gift receipts, event information, and to obtain information on how to contact faculty and other SSW alumni.

The Joint Doctoral Program in Social Work and Social Science is dedicated to providing support and quality services to faculty and current and prospective students.

The facility manager’s office is responsible for the overall upkeep of the building inside and out, including renovations both major and minor. This office is also responsible for day-to-day problems related to building systems--for example, heating, cooling, repairs, and safety issues. Office moves and keys are also handled through this office. The audio visual office reports to this office.

The Faculty and Administrative Support Team (FAST) office is responsible for the preparation of course work, reimbursements, and purchasing needs of the SSW faculty.

Renee Heath is the office manager for the FAST office. Her duties include reimbursements and purchasing, along with the coordination of the continuing education program. Kim Cramer manages travel and hosting expense reports, and she and Roxanne Loy handle preparation of course work and inquiries and registration of continuing education attendees.

The Office of Field Instruction is charged with developing and providing students with field-based educational opportunities that lead to competent social work practice under the supervision of credentialed/approved field instructors whose field sites have approved affiliations with the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan.

The office is comprised of a director, five full-time field educators/field liaisons (who facilitate student field placements and monitor student progress via site visits), and one full-time administrative coordinator.

The goal of the Office of Global Activities (OGA) is to promote social work in a global context at the U-M SSW, with the following agenda: to promote the U-M SSW’s leadership role in global social work education and research, to increase students’ competencies in global social work practice, and to foster an environment conducive to global social work education and research.

Frank Zinn, OGA director, provides leadership for U-M SSW regarding global social work issues and implements the vision/mission of the office by working with the dean, associate deans, Field Office, and relevant committees. Ziehyun Huh, OGA program manager, manages the overall administration of the OGA and implements the development of the Visitor Scholar’s Program, student outreach initiatives, international exchange agreements, global field placement sites, publicity, and event programming.

The Social Work Library is a full-service library with paper and electronic collections that support research and courses of the School of Social Work. The library houses a SITES computer lab and a computer classroom. Services include a comprehensive information literacy program and course reserves. Library staff provide research advice to students and faculty at the reference desk, through individual consultations, and electronically through the Ask Us service.

Jennifer Nason Davis, head, is collection coordinator for social work and anthropology, as well as Graduate Library interim collection coordinator for social sciences. Sally Lawler, public services librarian, is library instruction coordinator. Barbara Beaton, public services librarian, creates and edits subject guides and acts as exhibits coordinator. Karen Blackford, information resources reference specialist, is the circulation and course reserves coordinator. Nicole Scholtz, information resources reference specialist, is serials coordinator, library instruction coordinator, and GIS specialist. Jamie Nielsen, information resources assistant senior, is night and weekend manager and web specialist.

The Nonprofit and Public Management Center equips students with interdisciplinary insight that can help them operate more effectively when working for or collaborating with nonprofit institutions. The Nonprofit and Public Management Center is a collaboration among the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, and Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Ashley Zwick, managing director, oversees all aspects of NPM’s programs. Angela Lausche, student activities coordinator, oversees all NPM student programming, including the Board Fellowship program, Domestic Corps, NPM Self-Directed Internship, and Doctoral Support programs. Pattie Rayl, administrative specialist, oversees professional and administrative support of NPM’s programs.

Registrar’s Office

The Registrar’s Office maintains the academic records of students in the MSW program and those with non-candidate-for-degree (NCFD) status. The office also implements curriculum scheduling (term class schedules) for the MSW program.

The Registrar’s Office assists with issues regarding dropping, adding, and modifying classes, as well as term withdrawals; provides relevant information to students prior to each registration period; assists with matters related to closed courses and the petition process; processes course exemptions, substitutions, transfer credits, and special/independent studies to student records as appropriate; maintains course descriptions and term course schedules; maintains the School’s academic calendar; processes or directs as appropriate requests for verification of education for current and former students; implements school policies as they relate to Incomplete grades; monitors and reviews student records for MSW-degree approval; and maintains the on-line degree audit.

Verna Bell, school registrar, oversees the functioning of the office and implements curriculum scheduling. Dona Kennedy, recorder, reviews student records for degree approval, assists with registration-related issues and questions, and processes verification of education requests.

Research Administration Services

Research Administration Services (“Research Office”) is responsible for all aspects of pre- and post-award research administration of externally sponsored research grants, contracts, and awards. This includes locating funding opportunities, assisting investigators with the preparation and submission of proposal applications, working with sponsors and central units to negotiate contract and award terms, monitoring project budget activity to ensure compliance with University and sponsor policies and guidelines, reviewing and approving sponsored research expenditures, preparing monthly projection reports, and preparing various post-award requests to sponsors.

Michelle M. Hall, manager, manages the daily operations of the office and assists the faculty in the administration of research grants, contracts, and awards. Meredith A. Ingram, grants and contracts specialist, assists the faculty in the administration of research grants, contracts, and awards and helps to coordinate annual workshops and presentations. Robert Joseph Taylor, research associate dean, oversees the operations of the office and provides support to faculty in the development and submission of grants.

The Office of Student Services (OSS) is responsible for admissions, financial aid, student services, and career services for the MSW program. The Office of Student Services assists students with questions and concerns regarding financial aid, enrollment status, career advice and counsel, and/or availability of other services. Students and prospective students are encouraged to contact the office regarding any School-related questions or concerns. This office can also help connect students who are experiencing nonacademic problems with the appropriate internal and/or University and community supportive service.

Assistant Dean of Student Services Tim Colenback has overall responsibility for the School’s recruitment and admissions program, financial aid allocation, and student services. Michelle Woods is director of career services, as well as the School’s Freedom of Information Officer responsible for providing students with access to their records. Additional MSW professional staff in OSS include Erin Zimmer, student services admissions and recruitment coordinator; Nyshourn Price-Reed, student services specialist; Lauren Davis, student services specialist; and Sandy Rod, student services office manager.
