Cleanliness Ethic
It is the responsibility of all members of the School of Social Work community to:
- Deposit their trash in the appropriate receptacles
- Notify the Facilities Office of spills
- Replace chairs and tables that they have moved from their proper locations
- Remove all personal items from desks, tables, and areas they have used
It is everyone's responsibility to maintain the physical environment of the School. Everyone should return any room to its starting condition when finished using the room.
Library Use Policies and Guidelines
The Social Work Library has two small rooms for use by social work students, staff, and faculty for the purposes of group project/group study interaction. These two rooms (B794, B792) are available, on a reservation basis, only during the library's hours of operation. These rooms are not available as classrooms (e.g., for semester-long activities). Social Work Library staff can arrange reservations. Requests may be submitted to social.work.library@umich.edu
The Social Work Library includes a computer classroom (B696) with 30 workstations and one instructor station. This room is available on a reservation basis for School of Social Work instructional staff and Social Work Library staff for the purpose of providing a hands-on instructional environment. This classroom is available only during regular library hours of operation. To submit a request for use of this classroom, instructors should send a message to ssw.rooms@umich.edu and include ALL dates and times of the reservation and the reason for your request, such as course number, demonstration, and workshop. See the U-M SSW Standard Practice Guide for complete guidelines for using the computer classroom.
The Social Work Library's stacks, as well as computing and study areas, are not available to groups for events such as presentations, conferences, ceremonies, meetings, lectures, panel discussions, readings, productions, religious services, exhibits, and film showings. While the School of Social Work and the University Library have been known to make this space available in the past for special ceremonies, the costs associated with making the space "functional" for special events are extreme and not without impact on library service provisions. Factors to consider are:
- Timing during academic term (e.g., intersession, holidays, beginning of fall term, during midterms)
- Hours of event and conflicts with library operating hours
- Labor costs such as custodial services, event set-up and take-down, library operations, security, and audio visual services
- Group affiliation with the School of Social Work
- Benefit to the School of Social Work community, relation to University Library/Social Work Library mission, and interest of library users
- Maximum number of people allowed as determined by occupancy limit
- Adherence to standard library policies (such as food, drink, and smoking)
It is the responsibility of the Social Work librarian, School of Social Work facilities staff, and CATS office staff to interpret and apply these guidelines on a daily basis. Any questions or conflicts with these guidelines will be referred to the School of Social Work Facilities Advisory Committee at the next regularly scheduled meeting, in coordination with the administrations of the School of Social Work and the University Library. Exceptions to these guidelines must be approved by the administrations of the School of Social Work and the University Library.
